Practice :: Fundamental
Be certain that your reactions are large enough to "read"
on the air. Television is an intimate but cool medium, and reactions
that would be clear in person often will not be discernible on the
air.
To
come across as yourself to viewers, you may actually have to be
more demonstrative than you would in everyday conversation. Time
and again, we’ve heard talent say that what felt over the
top at the time looked natural and appropriate when they saw it
on the aircheck.
Watch yourself with the sound turned down. Does the expression on
your face change enough that you can tell when the emotional focus
of the newscast changes?
Now listen without watching the screen. Can you hear the emotional
changes in your voice?
If the answer to either of these questions is no, then chances are
you can do more physically and vocally to be certain that your reactions
are noted and appreciated by your viewers.
