Tony Martinez joined The Coaching Company in 2001 after a distinguished
career as anchor, producer and reporter in major market and network
sports television. He has received a George Foster Peabody award
and three national Emmys as a producer for ESPN’s acclaimed
Sports Century series. In addition to his work with TCC client stations,
Tony has mentored some of the top sports talent on network television
including Daryl Johnston, Michael Irvin and Craig James.
As a manager, Tony has served as Regional News Director for Fox
Sports Southwest. His responsibilities included reorganization
of the news operation and hiring and training of all on-air anchors
and reporters and producers. His tenure at FSN included numerous
broadcast awards and double-digit ratings growth for the regional
sports network.
Tony began his 20-year career as a sportscaster in Phoenix, and
went on to successful on-air careers in Dallas, Denver, and Washington,
D.C., doing sports on both a local level as well as for ABC News.
He’s the winner of two regional Edward R. Murrow awards,
a dozen Katie awards and several Heartland Emmys for sports anchoring,
reporting and producing. In 2002, his powerful documentary on
the late Tom Landry won several national awards including the
IRIS.
A part-time documentary filmmaker, Tony produced and directed
a two-hour documentary in 2002 about his father’s experience
in the infamous Bataan Death March in the Pacific theatre in World
War II. Colors of Courage, Sons of New Mexico Prisoners of Japan
won the coveted Best Documentary from the Taos Film Festival in
2003.
